The Story of Spirit Halloween Stores #shorts
Spirit Halloween, one of spooky season’s favorite internet memes, is now 40 years old - and its origins are in the Bay Area.
The chain, which has over 1,500 pop-ups nationwide and has been known for quickly snagging up empty storefronts, is the brainchild of Joe Marver. In 1983, he opened a Halloween store at the Castro Valley Mall. At the time, he did business in party goods and women’s apparel, and when a dancewear store selling costumes at the mall closed, he saw an opportunity.
Why Halloween, in particular? According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. Halloween spending is projected to reach a record $12.2 billion in 2023, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. The trade association predicts the holiday will surpass the previous record, $10.6 billion, in 2022. (According to career guidance site Zippia, Spirit Halloween’s annual revenue is approximately $1.1 billion.)
Whether Marver has a special affinity for Halloween, a 2016 Bloomberg article described it as not a “strong love.” KQED asked him again about this impression.
“I had to be somewhat into it to start it,” he said.
Marver’s gamble worked out, and the concept took off.

Every Kenyan who is not the daughter or son of a well to do family has to go through vicious chronic stress in the school system. Haranguing, caning and brutal dehumanization is the order. If you read this, please make it to Kenya and obtain a slot on a main Televised national media appearance. It is criminal, banned by constitutional edicts but it is impossible for teachers who themselves are victims to see the light of wisdom. Help to end trauma.
How about a 1 way ticket back to Africa with our apologies?
The democrats is Playing. They want even open the door to allow us to get money to buy land. The democrats not saying that to their immigrants. So we need money. If black people still doing drugs in 2024 that's the government problem. The Nation of Islam has done wonders for black people to take them off drugs maybe the government need to send black people to the nation of Islam. Let them help them so they can get their cash.
Racist.
If they give blacks our reps. I will gladly take an unlimited food card, they can keep the money.
The neighborhood should be overlooked! It's a hot mess.
I lived for a time, 1967, on Pine Hill Rd, kinda the outskirts of Milk Valley then. Couple friends of mine, and myself, took a hike up some trails one day, from where we lived and came across that car, wrecked at that spot. We didn't know what or why it was there just thought it was pretty cool that we made it this far up n came across a wrecked car. I was 14 then, n have told the tale many times over, of following unknown dirt trails, up a steep hillside, to see the view and discover a old wrecked car.
😂😂😂 free money for people who were never slaves 😅😅😅😅
Whaaaaaaah muh black pepo probwems Whaaaaaaah muh slaveries Whaaaaaaah!
Feel free to look up this vid that was the same year…”Exclusive video: the first hunt by a great white shark ever recorded in San Francisco Bay” . I think not. Ma’am your braver than me 😂
I visited fisherman’s wharf and came here EVERY DAY. This place is I’m the reason I came to San Fran
I am an Artist Sir. Please support me to sell my paintings thank you
Funny how all the speculation seems to leave out the native Americans that were right there.
Thanks Silicon Valley for another dismantled-in-the-future trolleybus network... 🙄😒😠
"market rate" and " mixed income" in SF are very far away from each other. Rich get richer. Poor get poorer.
Another scumbag
Of course they all made it, look at distance, probably even trained for it before in cells
Move to another state, California is drying up and becoming a desert.
A buffet for sharks.
They'll get NOTHING and eventually stop sniveling, lest they remain TEARFUL.
This didn’t age so well…
Whoever said no to this whole thing should be switched out and fired. BART should be in Marin. They should have BART in Marin, San Mateo, South San Jose, and more of Santa Clara County. I think it’d be cool if BART had a Gilroy extension from, say, Milpitas to Gilroy. Or something. Maybe we’ll make the Milpitas to Gilroy portion an eBART train. You know those trains that they have in Contra Costa county on the Antioch line, extending from Pittsburgh Baypoint East to Antioch, and eventually potentially to Brentwood, Tracy, and more. maybe we’ll just have to switch out the E with an S. And I think it would be cool if the BART went through South San Jose. Then I can take BART to school. Also Cupertino, Mountain View, Los Altos, potentially Los Altos Hills? Hopefully they make it by 2100.
So thats where the money is going to the non profit so the homeless issue will never resolve..very sad.
Freehold paid for houses for all African Americans born in the USA since last year. and onwards for 400 years ( slavery days ) would be a good gesture.
You'll get NOTHING!
Imagine waking up to your own great artworks.
Somebody's a little confused on their American history. It would make more sense to class action lawsuit the Democratic Party, since they were the ones that owned the slaves. They're still trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the descendants of the democratic slaves today.
This is still going on the U.S. owes that.
Oh hail gnaw!!! Y'all will get NOTHING!
:37 Somehow Czionish gouls didnt have a ongoing battle for reparartions. Hmmm I wonder jooz holding FREEDMENS CASH REPARATIONS!
Uh the US only had slavery for about 70 years. Before that it was England, Spain and France. So ask France, England and Spain for the reparations.
They dont want the descendants of Africans in America to own any land or anything even to be uplifted in the businesses.
Australia separates its own citizens from their families, it is worse than the US.
Give the reparations and let ppl do as they please with CASH. Anything other than that is BS. Education, healthcare and other services we can pay for our own. Every single person is different.
How about NOTHING with a smile‽
Sponsored by Heinrich Ford, Getty and William Randolph Hearst. There they go again blame the robber barrons. Real Royals are Rockefellers and Rothschilds.
I still think it's tragic that reparations were never paid to the descendants. America has paid every other group it wronged reparations. Today, America pays Israel $3.5 billion dollars annually, co-signed by the first black president (Barack Obama) in World War 2 reparations it doesn't even owe. Obama does not deserve a library. MY IDEA OF REPARATIONS? Non-immigrant blacks should not have to pay state or federal income taxes for the next 500 years. Until this becomes law, the descendants who have not found their own way will continue to proudly wreak havoc on American Society. It is "The Hate That Hate Made".
What exactly did they build?
Massive Generational Economical capital
@@Her_Creative Thanks so much, it is really nice.
How about giving reparations to the Native Americans, Mexicans and to the Natives from the Caribbean Islands, who were displaced by Africans. Their race can still be found in northern South America.
Wow Oxford Elementary! That’s awesome
Castro Valley Mall in 1983?
If you guys want money go get it from the black guys who sold you
'Tis a pity all of these art collectors could fund public museums so everyone gets to see them instead of keeping them for themselves to enjoy only. Shocked at the Pollock being hung over the kid's bed, who didn't even know what it was back then. So what was the point? Greed.
4:13 That brave George of the Jungle stuntman rope swinging off the Bay Bridge terrified me as a kid watching George of the Jungle... It still is scary!
On behalf of white, Indo-Europeans: I don't care it's not my problem....end of discussion.

When you subsidize poverty and failure, you get more of both.
John Jeide!! A San Francisco Bay Area legend. I worked at a restaurant with this bartender many years ago...Great guy!! FYI, they have to make them this fast because of how many they sell.
